Tight Kernel Bounds for Problems on Graphs with Small Degeneracy

چکیده
Kernelization is a strong and widely-applied technique in parameterized complexity. In a nutshell, a kernelization algorithm for a parameterized problem transforms a given instance of the problem into an equivalent instance whose size depends solely on the parameter. Recent years have seen major advances in the study of both upper and lower bound techniques for kernelization, and by now this area has become one of the major research threads in parameterized complexity. We consider kernelization for problems on d-degenerate graphs, i.e. graphs such that any subgraph contains a vertex of degree at most d. This graph class generalizes many classes of graphs for which effective kernelization is known to exist, e.g. planar graphs, H-minor free graphs, H-topological minor free graphs. We show that for several natural problems on d-degenerate graphs the best known kernelization upper bounds are essentially tight. In particular, using intricate constructions of weak compositions, we prove that unless NP⊆ coNP/poly: – Dominating Set has no kernels of size O(k(d−1)(d−3)−ε) for any ε > 0. The current best upper bound is O(k 2 ). – Independent Dominating Set has no kernels of size O(kd−4−ε) for any ε > 0. The current best upper bound is O(k). – Induced Matching has no kernels of size O(kd−3−ε) for any ε > 0. The current best upper bound is O(k). We also give simple kernels for Connected Vertex Cover and Capacitated Vertex Cover of size O(k) and O(k) respectively. Both these problems do not have kernels of size O(kd−1−ε) unless coNP/poly. In this extended abstract we will focus on the lower bound for Dominating Set, which we feel is the central result of our study. Sharp Upper bounds for Multiplicative Version of Degree Distance and Multiplicative Version of Gutman Index of Some Products of Graphs
In $1994,$ degree distance of a graph was introduced by Dobrynin, Kochetova and Gutman. And Gutman proposed the Gutman index of a graph in $1994.$ In this paper, we introduce the concepts of multiplicative version of degree distance and the multiplicative version of Gutman index of a graph. We find the sharp upper bound for the multiplicative version of degree distance and multiplicative ver...
متن کاملKernels for below-upper-bound parameterizations of the hitting set and directed dominating set problems
In the Hitting Set problem, we are given a collection F of subsets of a ground set V and an integer p, and asked whether V has a p-element subset that intersects each set in F . We consider two parameterizations of Hitting Set below tight upper bounds: p = m − k and p = n − k. In both cases k is the parameter. We prove that the first parameterization is fixed-parameter tractable, but has no pol...
متن کاملMore inequalities for Laplacian indices by way of majorization
The n-tuple of Laplacian characteristic values of a graph is majorized by the conjugate sequence of its degrees. Using that result we find a collection of general inequalities for a number of Laplacian indices expressed in terms of the conjugate degrees, and then with a maximality argument, we find tight general bounds expressed in terms of the size of the vertex set n and the average degree dG...
متن کاملOn the super domination number of graphs
The open neighborhood of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the set $N(v)$ consisting of all vertices adjacent to $v$ in $G$. For $Dsubseteq V(G)$, we define $overline{D}=V(G)setminus D$. A set $Dsubseteq V(G)$ is called a super dominating set of $G$ if for every vertex $uin overline{D}$, there exists $vin D$ such that $N(v)cap overline{D}={u}$. The super domination number of $G$ is the minimum car...
متن کاملOn discriminativity of Zagreb indices
Zagreb indices belong to better known and better researched topological indices. We investigate here their ability to discriminate among benzenoid graphs and arrive at some quite unexpected conclusions. Along the way we establish tight (and sometimes sharp) lower and upper bounds on various classes of benzenoids.
